Henry, one of society's forgotten, lives in his mind as much as the old lockhouse down by the canal. Although he sees things differently than most, he knows that to survive he must make a home for himself in the world and also in his own body. At turns a distubring and hopeful tale about the aftermath of sexual abuse and being differently abled, Even in the Quiet Places is lyrical fever dream. Christopher K. Doyle's lush prose ripples through the layers of Henry's trauma and desires to find a sometimes-uneasy grace.

Hollis Pride has just drowned in a river fishing. As he watches the police pull his body from the rocks, a girl touches his arm and brings him to meet her dying grandmother who needs his eyes to see what death will be like. As Hollis obliges, and gives her his eyes, he meets more of the living in need of his body parts. He hasn’t died the correct way and the more body parts he gives away the more difficult it is for him to ascend from the world of the living. His wife Nora also wants something—a child. And though Hollis was never able to provide her with a child in life, in death, they have to work in parallel worlds to find a child before he’s forced to leave the living world forever.

Bio

Christopher K. Doyle grew up in Brunswick, Maryland, a small town nestled on the banks of the Potomac River and Blue Ridge Mountains. After receiving his MFA from the University of Baltimore, he's written about the origins of country music, an embattled elementary school principal in urban America, and the C&O Canal. He lives in Baltimore with his wife, daughter, and bluetick coonhound all in a cramped row house.
